Teaching
Teaching I have learned can be one of the most difficult professions!
It can also be one of the most rewarding professions!
I am so thankful for the teaching positions I have had they have greatly impacted my life.
They have shown me how to be a better teacher and that there are many aspects to being a good teacher its not just the ability to instruct. Its so much more then that its being a friend, disciplinarian, counselor, provider, entertainer, self esteem coach. It has been difficult going from one position to another I so long to be in a school that I can call home. Its difficult when you get attached to students and teachers and then for whatever reason budget, administration, or other things cause you to have to move on. Don't get me wrong I love being a guest teacher you get to meet new kids travel around to different classrooms, work with all different age groups and unique students. It can be nice not to have to worry about setting up a classroom, dealing with paperwork or the other things teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. Yet I still long to have my own classroom where on a daily basis I am greeting my students, challenging them academically and socially. Forming those special relationships with them and trying to make a difference in there lives anyway I can!
Teaching and Learning Blogs
I am a special educator and I am dedicating this blog to topics that relate to teaching and learning. The concerns I have as a special educator will also be discussed. Some of the blogs may also relate to helping parents be advocates for their child with special needs. Also to help children advocate for themselves.

Moving Forward
It is so hard to believe I am a week away from recieving my masters degree I am really excited and nervous at the same time to take those final steps. It has felt like such a lengthy process and I cant believe I am finally there!! I am so nervous to see what comes next and at the same time hoping for the best! I really hope that I am able to find a school that i fit into the community and a place that I can grow and have an impact on young lives! I am ready to move forward in this Journey and looking forward to what God has for me next!!

Phonics and Phonemes
Phonics and Phonemes
I am finishing up my Masters Degree in the area of Learning Disabilities and I am currently taking a class on best practices for struggling readers. This class inspired me to put some tips in my blog for parents to better help their children who are struggling with reading. The book Foundations of Remedial and Clinical Reading Instruction by Sandra Mccormick and Jerry Zuttel states, phonemic awareness is hearing individual sounds that make up spoken words and phonics is the relationship between the sounds of spoken language and letters in written language. phonemic awareness relates to reading and spelling words. Phonics should be taught in the context of learning to read and write. Some helpful activities to do to support phonemic awareness would be; telling students different rhyming words and having them repeat a rhyming word back to you, reading rhyming books such as Dr. Seuss, using letter tiles to have students create words. Parents could also have a practice spelling bee with their students to see how many words they can spell. For phonics I would show the child different letters and have them tell me what sound it makes. The parent could also give the students some words and see if they could write them down after hearing the sounds.
There are many websites and Ipad Apps that are available that relate to phonics and phonemes.
One of my favorites my son always went to was www.starfall.com this website sounds out the words for them and also has many fun phonics games they can play.
Some additional reading and phonics websites include;
www.magickeys.org

Some of the phonics and Dolch word apps available for Ipad and through marketplace are;
1000 sight words, spell blocks, short vowels, pocket phonics,Super Why!, Rock and Learn Phonics, Abc phonics,Dolch Sight words, Learn DolchSightWords, LearnElementarySightWords, Sight Words for Reading. Also there are many more that come up if you simply search sight words, phonics or reading apps.
Hopefully this was helpful on some more ways to help your child with reading. One of my biggest recommendations is find what your child likes to read and encourage them to take a little time everyday to read because the more they read the better they become at reading!!

Since I am currently taking a class on using technology in the classroom I thought this slideshow was a good one to choose since it went with the theme of using technology in the classroom.
